Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Civil Defence Plan.

asked the Minister for Defence whether any investigation has taken place with regard to the measures necessary for a civil defence plan for the City of Dublin to be effective against atomic weapons, and, if so, whether any proposals have been received by him as a result of such investigation.

Investigations of the nature referred to by the Deputy have been carried out by the civil defence officer for Dublin City and the results have been communicated to my Department. While the plan for Dublin was under consideration there were further developments in thermonuclear weapons (i.e. the hydrogen bomb) which were of such a nature as to be likely to influence the whole pattern of civil defence planning. Further planning for Dublin was temporarily suspended until my Department had secured additional information regarding these new developments. It was not possible to secure this information before the latter part of last year and it is still being studied in relation to future civil defence planning not only for Dublin but for the country as a whole.
