Vol. 155 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Non-Irish Insurance Companies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the amount of money spent within the State by non-Irish insurance companies (a) in the settlement of claims and (b) in administration expenses, in the year 1954.

The figures available to me relate to calendar years and not to the financial year. The sums spent within the State in 1954 by non-Irish insurance companies and by syndicates of Lloyds Underwriters in the settlement of claims amounted to £6,300,000 approximately and in administration expenses, including commission, amounted to £2,420,000 approximately. These figures relate only to insurance business particulars of which are required to be furnished under the Insurance Acts of 1909 and 1936 and do not, therefore, include marine, aviation and transit business to which the Acts do not refer and for which returns are not required to be made by the companies.
