Vol. 157 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Aran Trawler Incidents.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has received a complaint from the skipper of the Aran trawler, Ros Einne, concerning a French steam-trawler which crossed the Aran trawler's gear, thus dragging the latter boat a distance of one mile until a sea rope broke, with a resultant loss of a day's fishing for the Ros Einne; whether he is aware that both trawlers were flying the admiralty signal indicating trawling; and, if so, what action he proposes to take in the matter.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has received reports of damage caused to the fishing gear of Aran trawlers by foreign trawlers, and, if so, what action he proposes to take to deal with such offences in future.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of allegations concerning interference by a French boat with the fishing operations of the Ros Einne, and, if so, if he will make a statement in the matter.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 12, 13 and 14 together.

I am aware of the allegations referred to in the questions and the usual steps are being taken by my Department to contact the owner of the French vessel alleged to have caused the damage and interference complained of with a view to securing compensation for the aggrieved party.
