Vol. 157 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Lee Hydro-electric Scheme—Compensation Claims.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will ask the E.S.B. to settle expeditiously the outstanding claims for compensation in respect of dispossessed homesteads and lands soon to be flooded in connection with the Lee hydro-electric scheme in the Inniscarra and Carrigdrohid areas, and if he will state (a) the number of unsettled cases, and (b) when negotiations are likely to be concluded.

While I must make it clear that this is a matter in respect of which I have no function I have made inquiries and have been informed by the E.S.B. that out of a total of 144 claims received by the board 38 have yet to be settled. I have been assured by the board that it is anxious to dispose of all outstanding claims as early as possible and that it hopes that the negotiations on the outstanding cases will be concluded within the next few months.

If the Minister were made aware of the fact that the compensation offered in many cases, where the houses and farm buildings are being flooded, would not be sufficient even to erect a decent rural cottage, would he be able to intervene to see that more equitable compensation is offered?

That is a separate matter.

The E.S.B. Amendment Act, 1945 gives that function to the board and deprives me of the right to intervene in such cases.
