Vol. 157 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Housing Grants.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he proposes to make an Order extending the period for the payment of housing grants, which expired on 31st March last, and, if so, when?

I am not empowered to make an Order of the nature referred to by the Deputy. The matter will be appropriate to the forthcoming Housing Bill.

I should like to draw the attention of the Minister to the fact that a number of people who have new houses under course of construction, or who are contemplating the erection of new houses, are of the opinion that there is a possibility that the existing grant of £275, or pro rata, may not be continued. Will the Minister allay their anxiety in that respect?

Of course, the Deputy will appreciate that I cannot anticipate legislation. As I informed the House the other day, I hope to introduce a Housing Bill this month which will clarify the position.

Would the Minister even go so far as to say, that where the existing provisions guarantee that, new provisions will not be less favourable?

That is an entirely separate question.
