Vol. 157 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Services.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will state (a) the areas in Dublin where recabling is expected to be completed within (i) six months, (ii) 12 months, and (iii) more than 12 months; (b) the number of applications for telephone lines outstanding in Dublin and the rest of the country, respectively, on 1st April, 1956; and (c) the number of outstanding applications in (i) Dublin and (ii) the rest of the country, of over two years' duration, distinguishing in the latter case between lines of under and over one and a half miles in length from the residence to the nearest exchange.

The information requested is as follows:—

(a) (i) Underground cabling schemes have been completed or are expected to be completed within six months in the following broad areas:—

The centre city area bounded roughly by the North and South Circular Roads;

The Howth-Sutton area including Baldoyle and Raheny;

The Dún Laoghaire area including Monkstown, Dalkey, Killiney, Sandycove, Foxrock, Carrickmines, Cabinteely;

Portions of Terenure, Rathgar, Crumlin, Walkinstown and Clontarf.

(ii) Areas where schemes are expected to be completed within 12 months are:

The areas detailed under (a) (i) and in addition:

Portion of Drumcondra, Glasnevin, Whitehall, Rathmines, Terenure, Clontarf, Walkinstown and Crumlin.

(iii) Remaining areas where underground relief is or will be needed.

The foregoing particulars are the best estimates which can be given based on continuance of the present programme and are subject to the qualifications that it is not possible to forecast completion dates with any degree of precision until schemes are far advanced and that there may be small areas requiring local cabling within areas where main cabling has been completed.

(b) 2,910 in Dublin; 1,380 in the rest of the country.

(c) (i) 172.

(ii) 55 of which 50 are over 1½ miles radially distant from the nearest exchanges.
