Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Automation in Irish Industry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will make a statement on the likely effects of automation on Irish industry and the Government's attitude in the matter.

Automation is the subject of much current international thought and discussion and it appears that there are different views as to its likely repercussions on industry and industrial employment.

It is not practicable at this stage to assess the possible effects of, or to define an attitude towards, automation in Irish industry but I should like to take this opportunity of urging prior consultation and co-operation between managements and workers with a view to avoiding or minimising any undesirable repercussions if and when methods of automation are in contemplation for any industry in this country.
