Vol. 159 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Post-Primary Age Groups: Education Courses.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (a) the estimated numbers of boys and girls, respectively, in each of the age groups 14 to 15 years, and 15 to 16 years, in (i) the Republic and (ii) the County Borough of Dublin, and (b) the numbers and percentages in each case enrolled at whole-time education courses.

The latest year for which completed returns in respect of the particular statistics requested are available is 1951-52, when they were then specially assembled for the Council of Education. The estimates now given have been arrived at by taking the 1951-52 figures and adjusting them in relation to 1954-55 by reference to the known factors in regard to the population.

The estimated enrolments relate to national schools, secondary schools and vocational schools. I have no information in regard to numbers enrolled in private educational establishments.

Due to the alterations since 1951 in the area covered by the County Borough of Dublin I regret that I am unable to give in relation to that area the estimates requested by the Deputy.
