Vol. 159 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bakery Trade Costings.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he has received the interim report which the committee set up to inquire into the costs of the bakery trade were required to furnish by 31st May last, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The interim report of the Flour and Bread Committee has been received and is at present under consideration by the Government. I am not at present in a position to make a statement on the matter.

Mr. Lemass

When is it likely the Government will reach a decision?

As soon as all aspects have been considered, with due regard to protecting the interests of the community in the best possible way. I take it the Deputy is not annoyed because the price of bread has not been increased.

Mr. Lemass

Could the Minister put a date on it?

The Deputy tried to put a date on it during the Kerry by-elections and he is six months out at least.

Are we to take it from the Minister's answer to the supplementary question that there will be an increase? That is what he said.

I said no such thing. I said that the matter was under consideration. I hope the Deputy's constituents will now note that he is bursting for an increase.

In the Minister's reply to the supplementary he asked Deputy Lemass if he were annoyed because there was going to be an increase in bread.

To keep the record right, what I asked Deputy Lemass was if he were annoyed because no such increase took place, although he prophesied an increase of a halfpenny on the 2 lb. loaf when he was in Tralee.
