Vol. 159 No. 8

Local Loans Fund (Amendment) Bill, 1956—Committee and Final Stages.

Bill put through Committee, reported without amendment, and received for final consideration.
Question proposed: "That the Bill do now pass."

I would just like to say that I welcome the assurance which the Minister for Finance has given that all the appropriate steps which may be necessary to deal with the grave situation in which we find ourselves will be taken so far as the Minister can assure us that will be done. I should also like to emphasise that if these measures are taken—and they are not going to be easy to take—the danger to which I referred will be averted and we shall restore soundness to our economy.

I hope the purpose of my speech will not be misconstrued. I think it is time that every one of us should be alive to the dangers that confront us. In another place, a Prime Minister warned his people that they were drifting towards poverty. We are, in fact, drifting towards bankruptcy and we want to avert that. It cannot be averted by smiles and jeers and sneers; it can only be averted by the measures which the Minister for Finance has indicated he is prepared to take when the proper time comes because the proper time will come, if it has not already arrived.

Question put and agreed to.

This is a Money Bill within the meaning of Article 22 of the Constitution.
