Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Service Employment and Remuneration.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of (a) established and (b) unestablished civil servants in employment on 1st January, 1956, and the total annual remuneration and allowances payable under both heads on the date in question.

On 2nd January, 1956, the numbers were (a) established civil servants, 18,221, and (b) unestablished civil servants 15,326; the total annual rate of remuneration and allowances payable was £10,979,675 and £5,044,328 respectively.

The figures do not include persons casually employed or payments in respect of overtime or the like.
