I want to commend a very satisfactory experiment carried out in Cork this year with the co-operation of the National Gallery authorities. They lent a number of pictures from the national collection for a temporary exhibition in Cork. It was a very successful venture. I want to commend to the Minister for his consideration the proposal that this should be extended to the whole country. We have a large number of pictures in the national collection which are not on permanent exhibition.
I think that what was done in Cork this year should be done in every other provincial centre where there are facilities for the showing of such pictures. This is a very important matter. The collection is very fine and very valuable. I was delighted to note how well attended the temporary exhibition was in Cork. I think the Minister should indicate to the Director of the National Gallery that it is in the national interest, in the interest of our people and our students, that this collection of pictures should be more readily accessible to people in the provincial centres.
