Vol. 159 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teachers' Retiring Gratuity.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the claim of the pre-1950 pensioned national teachers to the payment in full of the retiring gratuity on the same terms as apply to national teachers who retired after that date, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have nothing to add by way of statement to that issued by me on behalf of the Government to the Pensioned Teachers' Association and other bodies on 17th May, 1955. That statement was as follows:—

"The Government have given very careful consideration to the representations made in regard to the granting of further payments in respect of lump sum to teachers who retired prior to 1st January, 1950. The principle has not been conceded and cannot be conceded that revisions in superannuation conditions introduced for serving teachers should be applicable to those who had already retired. In these circumstances the Government are satisfied that the provision in the National Teachers' Superannuation (Amendment) Scheme, 1953, for the payment of an ex-gratia lump sum to teachers who had retired before 1st January, 1950, must be regarded as the maximum concession which they are prepared to make. It is regretted, accordingly, that any request for a further extension of the lump sum payment cannot be favourably considered.”

I wonder whether the Minister and the Government are aware that the survivors of the pre-1950 pensioned teachers are now living in dire want?
