Vol. 159 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Airport Accommodation for Jet Planes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the statement made recently by a high executive of an airline that Shannon Airport would be unable to cater for a jet type plane, which is to be put into operation by that company, as the runways for such planes would need to be 10,000 feet in length; whether he is aware of the possibility that Shannon will be by-passed in the future if the runways are not extended; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have seen Press reports of statements said to have been made recently by a representative of a foreign airline about the use of Shannon by commercial jet aircraft. So far as the rest of the question is concerned, I would refer the Deputy to the answer I gave to a previous question by him on this subject in the Dáil on the 26th June, 1956, and to my statement in the debate on the Estimates for 1956-57.
