Vol. 159 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - C.I.E. Dismissals at Limerick.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of dismissals which have taken place in the C.I.E. depot at Limerick City, and the reasons for such dismissals, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand from the Board of C.I.E. that in recent weeks they have been obliged, on grounds of redundancy, to dispense with the services of 28 of their temporary employees at Limerick.

The engagement and dismissal of staff are administrative functions and as such are matters for the Board of C.I.E. to determine in accordance with the operational requirements of the undertaking. Subject to this and without prejudice to the discretion which must finally remain with the board, I have made known to the board my desire that, in so far as may be practicable, any reductions in staff that may be necessary from time to time should be effected through normal wastage.
