Vol. 160 No. 1

Written Answers. - Cost of Road Construction.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state the average cost per mile of laying a road under normal conditions in (a) concrete, (b) tar-macadam, and (c) water-bound macadam.

The cost of road reconstruction is dependent on so many factors (such as foundation, drainage, availability of materials), that it would be impossible to give an accurate and representative estimate of general application. Some figures have however been taken out in the Department and they may be regarded as comparative. They refer to the provision of a road with a carriageway of 18 ft. carrying a reasonable amount of traffic. The figures are:—(a) concrete, reinforced £9,400 per mile, (b) tar or bitumen macadam £4,000 per mile, (c) water-bound macadam surface dressed £4,000 per mile.
