Vol. 160 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Achill School Repair.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the fact that tenders for the work were received last March, he will state the reason for the delay in having repairs carried out to Saula National School, Achill.

The placing of a contract for the scheme of enlargement and improvement to Saula National School, Achill, has had to be deferred for the present because of the fact that the existing contractual commitments of the Commissioners of Public Works in respect of expenditure of grants on school building, enlargement and improvement in the current financial year will fully exhaust the amount provided in the Estimates, under Vote 9.

Is the Minister aware that the two assistant teachers have to carry on two classes of 70 pupils in one small room, and is he aware this school is situated in the Gaeltacht of County Mayo?

I am aware of that and I am aware also of the fact that when the Deputy's Government were in office the Commissioners of Public Works were asked in May, 1951, to report on the situation and to propose a plan. It was only in July, 1954, that they were able to provide a report and a plan.

And now the plan is pigeon-holed.

You had neither plans nor good works.

Your pigeon-holes are full of plans.
