Vol. 160 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cattle Sales.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that Twenty-Six County cattle sold in the Six Counties, and kept there for the qualifying period for the purpose of earning the bounties, are being sent into the Twenty-Six County area for sale, and that this practice is having the effect of depressing prices here; and, if so, if he will take steps to ensure that the practice will not be allowed to develop to the stage at which it may cause serious damage to the trade here.

While I understand that some cattle bearing the official certification mark used in the Six Counties for identifying cattle presented for payments under the fatstock guarantee scheme in operation there have been brought in from the Six Counties, I am not aware that the entry of those cattle, having regard to the limited numbers involved, has had the effect suggested in the question. The position is, however, being kept under close observation.

More Border restrictions.

I do not think the Deputy grasps the significance of the question or of my reply. The rebuke is addressed to the Deputy putting down the question.
