Vol. 160 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dundalk Interments.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that many people, who at an inquiry held some time ago claimed the right of interment in Castletown cemetery, Dundalk, have been denied such right, even though many of them are the sole survivors of families that are already interred there, and, if so, if he will have the matter re-examined.

I am aware that continuing rights of interment in Castletown burial ground could not be granted to all the claimants and that some of the persons who were not exempted from the provisions of the closing order represented that they were the sole survivors of families already interred in this burial ground. I have already given special consideration to the claims of such persons, especially those who are of advanced age, but I cannot grant the rights sought unless there is space available in the graves. Soundings were made in every case where the grave spaces claimed could be identified. If any rejected claimant who is the sole survivor of a family interred in this burial ground puts forward a reasoned case against the results of the soundings of his family grave, I will be prepared to have his claim re-examined.
