Vol. 160 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sewerage in Cork Housing Scheme.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether he is aware that in a large number of corporation dwellings in Ballyphehane, Cork, the sewerage arrangements consist of Dublin artisan-dwelling type traps, and that this type of trap is obsolete and considered to be unsatisfactory and a danger to health; and, if so, if he will ascertain why such traps were installed in these houses.

I am aware that Dublin artisan-dwelling type sewer traps were installed by Cork Corporation in houses provided by them at Ballyphehane. This type of trap is not in itself inefficient but it is understood that its effectiveness can be readily impaired by interference by unauthorised persons. I am informed also that this type of trap is not used in current housing schemes and that a systematic examination is being made by the city engineer's staff of all such traps in previous corporation schemes.
