Vol. 160 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Savings Campaign Advertisements.

asked the Minister for Finance if, in connection with the savings campaign, he will state the total cost to date of advertising in the daily and evening newspapers, and why an advertising campaign has not been conducted in the weekly newspapers.

The savings publicity campaign to which the Deputy refers was conducted by the Savings Committee. The placing of advertisements to the best advantage within the total allocation made by me for this campaign was altogether a matter for the committee. For this purpose they were, I understand, advised by a voluntary committee of advertising agents.

I am informed by the Savings Committee that the total cost to date of press advertising, including Sunday papers and weekly provincials, is £8,290.

Would the Minister say, in connection with that, whether he considers the game was worth the candle with regard to results?

I think it is undoubtedly true that there has been a very great revival of interest in saving and I hope the revival of interest will be translated into cash.
