Vol. 160 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Redundant G.N.R. Clerks.

Mr. Lemass

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that a number of junior clerks employed by the Great Northern Railway Board have been notified that their services will not be required after 31st December, and if he will inquire whether these clerks are deemed to be redundant after that date because of the possible closing of sections of the line or because of an anticipated reduction of traffic; and whether, in the former case, he will ensure that the dismissals are not arranged so as to avoid the compensation provisions of the 1953 Act.

I am aware that a small number of junior clerks employed by the Great Northern Railway Board will become redundant on 31st December, 1956. I am informed by the G.N.R. Board that the redundancy is entirely due to a falling off in traffic over the past few years and consequential reorganisation of staff. The latter part of the question does not, therefore, arise.

Mr. Lemass

Am I to understand from that reply that these clerks are not covered by the compensation provisions of the Act?

That is a matter which I think they would have a right to argue. I would not like to express an opinion on the matter at this stage.
