Vol. 160 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification Extension.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the areas in the Inishowen Peninsula which it is anticipated will be dealt with under the rural electrification scheme during the coming 12 months.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that it is not possible at present to state the areas in the Inishowen Peninsula which will be developed under the rural electrification scheme during the coming 12 months. The time at which the remaining areas in the peninsula will be developed will depend on their order of priority in relation to areas awaiting development in the remainder of the county. The selection of areas for development under the rural electrification scheme and the determination of their order of priority are matters solely for the E.S.B. and I have no function in relation to them.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when the E.S.B. propose to extend rural electrification to the Cloughseoltia and Aille areas, Barna (West), County Galway.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the townlands of Cloughseoltia and Aille, Barna (West), County Galway, are included in the Moycullen-Oughterard area which has been developed under the rural electrification scheme for a number of years. When supply was originally being extended to the area the householders in these townlands were offered supply at the normal fixed charges but, with the exception of two, all refused to accept. Should the householders now wish to have the current made available to them I suggest that they should communicate with the board's district engineer in Galway.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce what progress has been made in connection with the extension of rural electrification to the Templenoe, Sneem, Tuosist and Bonane areas of South Kerry.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the Templenoe area has been considered for selection by the board on a number of occasions but has not so far been selected as the returns for the area have not compared favourably with those for other areas still awaiting development in the Tralee district. The area will be reconsidered for selection by the board in due course and the decision of the board will depend on how the area's returns compare with those for other areas awaiting development at the time in the Tralee district.

I am also informed that an official canvass of the householders in the Sneem area will be carried out shortly and that an official canvass of the householders in the Tuosist area, which includes Bonane, will be carried out as soon as possible.
