Vol. 160 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Wheat.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is in a position to state the price to be paid for next season's wheat crop.

I am not yet in a position to indicate the price which will be paid for next season's wheat crop. Before making a proposal to the Government in the matter, I propose to consider the views of the growers and the millers on the terms of the Wheat Order generally. I have requested the respective Associations to let me have their views.

Arising out of that reply, does the Minister not think that an announcement on the price of wheat for the coming season should have been made in October in order to encourage the farmers, particularly any of them who want to grow winter wheat, to get the crop in so that the harvest next year may be staggered and that better and more prolonged use may be made of the harvesting equipment available?

I do not believe that any of the farmers have any serious doubt that the price of wheat in the coming season will be that paid for the season just ended.

It is as well that they would be told the worst.

I hope they will not sow so much Capelle wheat and have it sprouting in the spring. I hope they grow some other varieties.
