Vol. 160 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Savings Committees.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the number of new savings committees actually functioning, distinguishing between (a) private industrial establishments and other trading companies, (b) private professional institutions such as banks and insurance companies, (c) State promoted companies, and (d) Civil Service, Gardaí and Army.

The particulars which the Deputy requests are not available. It is assumed that the Deputy means Savings Associations when he refers to Savings Committees. Associations may or may not be run by committees; generally they are groups of employees who authorise deductions from pay for savings purposes. They do not register with the Savings Committee or with any Government Department, unless they invest in Savings Certificates, in which case they register with the Department of Posts and Telegraphs. Thirty new associations have been registered in this way since the setting up of the Savings Committee.
