Vol. 160 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Carpet Imports.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware that (a) imports of Axminster carpets in the first six months of the current year amounted to 52,238 square yards, value £67,889, as compared with 37,760 square yards, value £50,097, for the first six months of 1955, and (b) imports of Wilton carpets during the same periods were 18,915 square yards, value £23,550, and 6,679 square yards, value £10,660, respectively; and, if so, what steps he has taken to restrict these unnecessary importations.

I am aware that imports of Axminster and Wilton carpets in the periods in question were as stated by the Deputy. The carpets are liable to a customs duty at the rate of 60 per cent. ad valorem (full rate) or 40 per cent. preferential. This duty is regarded as being bound under the Anglo-Irish Trade Agreement of 1938, so far as goods of British origin are concerned, and it may not be increased for the purpose envisaged by the Deputy except with the consent of the British authorities.
