Vol. 160 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rural Electrification in Kerry.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that the scheme for the extension of rural electrification to the Cahirciveen area does not include the townlands of Kells, Reacastle, Mountfoley, Gortaforia, Gleesk and Rhoades; and if, in view of the fact that Kells is a tourist resort having 15 guest houses along the coast, a licensed hotel, two shops and a post-office as well as a county council quarry, a creamery stop and a potential sawmill, the E.S.B. will review the position.

I am informed by the E.S.B. that the townlands mentioned are included in the Cahirciveen area which has recently been developed under the rural electrification scheme. The economics of extending supply to the householders of these townlands were examined by the board but it was found that because of their isolated location the normal fixed charges payable would be inadequate in relation to the capital cost of the high tension line and local network which would be required.

The board have stated that if any of the residents wish to obtain supply they should communicate with the board's district engineer in Tralee who will quote them the terms on which supply will be made available.
