Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reception in London from Radio Éireann.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the poor reception, of Radio Éireann broadcasts in the London area, and if, in view of the fact that this is the only link with Ireland for numerous Irish nationals in that area, he will take steps to improve the position.

The poor reception from Radio Éireann in the London area is mainly due to the fact that a number of foreign broadcasting stations are transmitting on or near the same wavelength as Athlone. This cannot be helped because there has been a big increase in the number of broadcasting, stations in recent years and there are now far more medium wave and long wave stations operating in the European area than there are wavelengths available for them.

The maximum power permitted for broadcasting transmitters under the international wavelength plan for Europe is designed to provide a service of good quality within the national territory of each country. We would like very much if Irish people in London could get good reception from Radio Éireann but I regret that we cannot do anything to improve the position there.
