Vol. 160 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Oil Consumption Statistics.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state in respect of the year 1955 our total consumption of oil, petrol, paraffin and diesel fuel, and if he will make available a break down of the consumption of the different types of fuel oils and petroleum products used by (a) agriculture, (b) industry, (c) public utilities, (d) Government Departments, (e) railways, (f) road freight, (g) road passenger services, (h) air transport, (i) shipping, (j) private motorists, and (k) private domestic consumers.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann. Comhairle to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the total home consumption of petrol, paraffin, diesel and other fuel oils and lubricating oil in 1955. Aviation motor spirit, etc., re-exported to Shannon Free Airport is not included in home consumption.

I regret that, it is not possible to supply the Deputy with the detailed classification by type of user which he requires. It is, however, possible to estimate roughly that in all industries and services covered by the Census of Industrial Production there were used 9,000,000 to 10,000,000 gallons of petrol and other light oils and about 100,000,000 gallons of heavy oils including fuel oil and lubricating oil. This estimate of course covers electricity and gas producing concerns.

Consumption on the railways in 1955 is estimated at 100,000 gallons of kerosene, and 2,000,000 gallons of diesel and other fuel oils including lubricating oil. The passenger road services of C.I.E. and the G.N.R. accounted for about 5,000,000 gallons of diesel oil and lubricating oil.

With regard to road freight transport the only estimates of consumption are those in respect of licensed hauliers (including the rail companies). The estimated consumption in 1955 was 2,000,000 gallons of motor spirits and fuel oils.

The amount of diesel and other fuel oils consumed in foreign-going ships in 1955 is estimated at 12,000,000 gallons.

Consumption of power or vaporising kerosene in 1955 is estimated at 13,000,000 gallons and it is considered that practically all of this oil was used in agriculture.

Following is the statement:—
