Vol. 160 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import Duties on Fertilisers.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the sums collected by way of import duty on phosphatic manures, potash, and nitrogenous manures, respectively, in each of the financial years 1945-46 to 1955-56, inclusive.

As the answer to the question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to circulate it in the Official Report.

Following is the statement:—

Potash and nitrogenous manures are not liable to duty. Certain phosphatic manures are liable to the duty on superphosphates, ground mineral phosphates and compound manures mentioned at Reference No. 245 in the Customs and Excise Tariff.

The receipts from the duty, which were derived almost entirely from superphosphates, were as follows in the financial years 1945/46 to 1955/56:—

Of the amount received in 1955/56, £27,362 has been repaid in the present financial year.

The duty on superphosphates was suspended on the 13th of this month by an Order made under the Supplies and Services (Temporary Provisions) Acts.
