Vol. 160 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers (resumed). - Irish Ships' Cargoes.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the proportion of the inward and outward cargoes between British ports and ports in the State which was carried in Irish-registered ships in each of the years 1953 to 1955.

Particulars of the tonnage of trade between this country and Britain, are not available and the only relevant statistics are those for the net tonnage of vessels with cargo, including their repeated voyages, which entered or cleared ports in this country in the years in question. I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement furnishing the information in so far as it is available.

Following is the statement:—

Percentage which the net tonnage of Irish-registered vessels entering or clearing ports in Ireland with cargo while engaged on direct trade with Britain, including their repeated voyages, bore to the net tonnage of all vessels engaged on such trade, including their repeated voyages, in the years 1953, 1954 and 1955.
