Vol. 160 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ross Island, Killarney: Owner's Statement.

asked the Taoiseach if, in view of the recent statement by the new owner of the Kenmare estate that he proposes to establish a colony of rich Americans on Ross Island on the shores of the Lower Lake, Killarney, he will state if the Government have considered whether or not the national interests may be prejudiced by the implementation of the proposal, and if they propose to take any steps in the matter.

I have seen the announcement made by the new owner of the Kenmare estate of plans in relation to Ross Island. I have also noted that he has repeated his earlier undertaking to do nothing which would harm the traditions of Killarney or spoil its natural beauty. The Government have no reason to doubt that this undertaking will be honoured in full, and the question of their taking any steps in relation to these plans will, therefore, not arise unless, in the carrying out of the plans, any consideration directly affecting the national interest should emerge. I have no reason to believe that, in such an event, the owner of the property would be otherwise than co-operative.

Is it a fact that the Taoiseach here in the House very recently, in reply to a question, stated that the Government had under consideration the possibility of introducing amending legislation to ensure that nothing would happen detrimental to rish interests as a result of any activities that would take place in Killarney? Is it not a fact that the present occupier—and I use the word "occupier"—intends without doubt to establish a rest camp in Kenmare estate for the purpose of facilitating a bunch of neurotic Hollywood personalities in between their matrimonial swopping activities?

The Deputy is grossly abusing his privilege as a member of this House to make attacks on people not here to defend themselves. May I answer him?

I think the remark should be withdrawn before any answer is made. The Deputy will withdraw the remark with respect to people who are not here.

Am I entitled to suggest that the people who come to Killarney will be a bunch of Hollywood neurotics?

The Deputy will withdraw the remarks.

I will not withdraw.

The Deputy will leave the Chamber.

I will not. I am entitled to suggest they will not be the type of people we want to see on Irish property.

I call the attention of the House to the fact that the Deputy has refused to obey the ruling of the Chair.
