Vol. 160 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turkey Exports to Europe.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in view of the very plentiful supply of turkeys which is available this year, he will take steps to have examined rapidly the possibility of securing an export market for Irish turkeys in Western European countries and in Germany in particular.

The question of obtaining every possible export outlet for our surplus turkeys is one that is kept constantly in mind, and efforts have been —and continue to be—made to develop an export trade in turkeys to Western European countries. Some inquiries have been received by exporters this season from Germany and Holland.

It must, however, be recognised that turkey meat is not widely consumed in Germany as a Christmas custom. Such of the Western European countries (France and Denmark, for example) as produce turkeys in quantity do so mainly for export to Britain.
