Vol. 160 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - International Atomic Energy Agency.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether Ireland has signed and adhered to the recent 82-nation Statute for the setting up of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and, if not, why not.

Ireland has not signed the Statute of the International Atomic Energy Agency. The question of whether she will do so within the 90 days that the Statute remains open for signature by States members of the United Nations independently of the Board of Governors of the Agency, that is, before the 23rd January next, is under consideration.

Does the Minister see any reason why we should not? From what I have read of the Statute, it seems one that should be of assistance.

It seems generally acceptable, but, as the Deputy will appreciate, certain technical matters have to be considered.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state the names of the 82 nations which signed the recently concluded Statute setting up the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Eighty-two nations have not signed the Statute of the International Atomic Agency.

On the 25th October last, the text of Statute was adopted unanimously by the 81 States attending the conference on the Statute.

On the 26th October, the Statute was opened for signature and was signed by 69 States. Since then, Italy has signed on the 25th November.

The names of the States signatories are given in a tabular statement which with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report.

It may be of interest to the Deputy that these signatures are subject to ratification and that no notice of ratifications has to date been received by us.

Following is the statement: States Signatory to the Statute of the International Atomic Agency:—
