Vol. 160 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Public Works Unemployment.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state in respect of the Office of Public Works the number of men who lost their employment during the past six months.

It will no doubt be appreciated that most of the employment given by the Office of Public Works is of a casual, short-term or temporary nature; including, for example, drainage surveys and drainage works, national monuments conservation works and occasional marine works. Termination of employment arises from a variety of reasons, such as completion of a particular scheme, normal seasonal reduction of work, dismissal for disciplinary reasons. The total number of men laid off under all headings during the six months ended 30th November, 1956, was 811, of whom about 25 only could be said to have had a prospect of continuous employment.

I might add that approximately 420 men were taken on during the period under review.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state why the 25 men were let go? Is it the general policy to drive more people to the emigration ship?

Do you not know that is nonsense; you do not believe it yourself?
