Written Answers. - Housing Requirements.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will state (a) the estimated number of new houses required at present to satisfy the housing requirements in (i) Dublin, (ii) Cork, (iii) Limerick, (iv) Waterford and (v) Galway; and (b) the number required in the remainder of the country, distinguishing between urban and rural needs.

According to the latest estimates furnished by the housing authorities the number of new local authority houses required to meet the needs of the areas in question were as follows at 31st October, 1956:—

Houses.

Cork County Borough

Limerick County Borough

1,116

Waterford County Borough

Galway Borough

387

Other Urban Areas

5,805

Rural Areas

10,457

These estimates of housing needs are at present being reviewed by the local authorities concerned and must be regarded as provisional. The estimates for Dublin County Borough are to some extent contradictory and are under further review by the corporation. Pending the outcome of this review a firm estimate is not available.
