Vol. 160 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplementary Petrol Rations.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is his intention to allocate supplementary rations of petrol to persons (a) who have no means, other than their private motor cars, of travelling to their places of employment, and (b) who are engaged in the car-hire industry.

I would refer the Deputy to the announcement in the public Press last Saturday that supplementary allowances of petrol will be granted to doctors, veterinary surgeons, clergymen, commercial travellers, midwives and nurses and that supplementary allowances will be made to firms engaged in the car rental business. Supplementary allowances will also be given to disabled drivers and to taxi operators. It was announced at the same time that applications from other categories of private motorists will be considered where the applicants can show beyond doubt that the use of a motor-car is absolutely essential to enable them to earn their livelihood or to perform their business and that it is not possible for them to make alternative arrangements. It will not be possible to meet requirements in full in these cases, but some supplementary allowance will be granted.
