Vol. 160 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Christmas Draws in Licensed Premises.

asked the Minister for Justice if, in view of the uncertainty that exists as to whether Christmas draws may be conducted in licensed premises this year, he will make a statement clarifying the position.

I am not aware of the uncertainty referred to by the Deputy. The law does not permit of Christmas draws on licensed premises save under permit of the local district officer of the Garda Síochána under Section 27 of the 1956 Act. A permit under Section 27 requires that the lottery shall comply with the following conditions: (1) the permit holder shall derive no personal profit from the lottery; (2) the total value of the prizes shall be not more than £300; (3) the value of each prize shall be stated on every ticket.

In addition, Section 33 of the Act requires that the name and address of the permit holder, and of any beneficiary, and of the Superintendent issuing the permit, shall be stated on every ticket.
