Vol. 160 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief of Hungary.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state whether the Red Cross Society have applied for an allocation from Government funds to enable them to carry out their programme of assistance for the victims of aggression in Hungary, and, if so, what amount the Government have contributed or propose to contribute.

The answer to the first part of the Deputy's question is in the negative. In view of the magnificent response by the Irish people to the appeal for funds in aid of the distressed people of Hungary, it seems unlikely that any subvention from State funds will be necessary. Should such a necessity arise, however, the Taoiseach has already made it clear in several public statements that the Government will be prepared to make the necessary funds available.
