Vol. 160 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sentences on Irishmen.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether, in view of the severity of the sentences imposed on the three young Irishmen in connection with the raid last year on the Arborfield military depot, Berkshire, he is now prepared to take up the matter with the British Home Secretary with a view to having the sentences remitted immediately.

I have nothing to add to my reply of the 26th October, 1955, in this matter.

Would the Minister say whether or not the fact that 12 months has elapsed would give justification to the suggestion that the time has come for the Minister to reconsider his decision of this time 12 months and make representations on behalf of these young men?

I do not think circumstances have altered sufficiently to warrant any representations.

Is it a fact that the Minister is taking into consideration other happenings to give an excuse so that no representations will be made on behalf of these young men?

I have told the Deputy I do not think circumstances have altered sufficiently to enable me to make representations.

Might I ask the Minister what he means by "circumstances"?
