asked the Taoiseach if he will give particulars of the number of persons employed in building, contracting and works of construction at the most recent convenient date and at the corresponding date last year.

Information on the total numbers actually employed in building, contracting and works of construction in the current year is not available. The following is, however, some relevant information relating to constituents of this total:—

(a) The number of persons employed in Local Authority Building was 5,813 in October, 1956, as compared with 6,527 in October, 1955.

(b) The number of men engaged on Employment Schemes sanctioned from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote was 1,019 in October, 1956, and 1,221 for the corresponding month last year.

(c) The number of persons employed on schemes under the Local Authorities (Works) Act at the end of October, 1956, was 591 and was 1,203 at the corresponding date in 1955.

(d) The number of persons employed by Local Authorities on road and bridge works was 18,375 at the end of October, 1956, and was 20,963 at the end of the same month in 1955.
