Vol. 160 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Tramway System.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state (a) whether permission was sought by C.I.E. from his Department to abandon the electric tramway system in Dublin City, (b) the date on which the permission was granted, and (c) if any consideration was given to the fact that any alternative methods of transport would have to depend on imported petrol or oil.

C.I.E. did not require ministerial permission to abandon the electric tramway system in Dublin City. The various tram services were discontinued at various dates between 1935 and 1949. I understand that, before proceeding to abandon the system, the company satisfied themselves that, having regard to the condition of the trams, track, cables and overhead wires, it would be impracticable to operate the existing fleet of trams for a further indefinite period.

I am also informed that the possibility of using trolley buses, which would not be directly dependent on imported fuel, was considered but that the company found that, such vehicles were not suited to modern traffic conditions in Dublin and that the capital and running costs would also be disproportionately high.
