Vol. 160 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - German Ambassador to Ireland.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether after the retiral of the former German Ambassador to Ireland the name of any proposed successor was submitted by the German Government and not accepted, and, if so, if he will state the reasons.

Is the Minister satisfied there was no question, either oral or written, of names offered to his Department prior to the present appointment? I do not want to cast any aspersions under any circumstances.

I told the Deputy the answer is in the negative.

Is the Minister aware that the information he conveys to me does not substantiate statements which appeared in responsible Continental newspapers?

The Deputy should appreciate that I am not responsible, nor is the Government, for what reports appear abroad. The only advice I can give him is that he should not always believe all the reports he reads.

There is no smoke without fire.

There is absolutely no truth in the Deputy's question.

I accept the Minister's statement.

Question No. 25.
