Vol. 160 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Corrib-Mask Channels.

asked the Minister for Finance whether it is proposed to carry out certain works on the channels connecting Loughs Corrib and Mask, and, if so, if he will state the nature of such works.

There is only one overground channel connecting Lough Corrib and Lough Mask. That channel is not covered by the Corrib-Clare Catchment Drainage Scheme now in progress. It will however be considered in connection with any scheme which may eventually be undertaken for the Corrib-Mask Catchment.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say that, in relation to the undertaking contemplated, due consultation will be had with the fishery authority?

That is correct.

Is it not a fact that the fishery rights on the Corrib are owned by a London fishmonger?

Is he from Killarney?

I want the Parliamentary Secretary to say whether the public rights will be infringed in any way by the proposed works? Will the Parliamentary Secretary say if his advisers will take counsel with the fishery authority to ensure that existing rights will not be infringed or lessened in any way?

Of course, that will be done, as it has been done up to this in every catchment area. I am sure the Deputy is quite familiar with what is happening in the best fishing in Ireland at the moment. No harm is being done there and I assume the same co-operation will take place when the Mask catchment area is being done.
