Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authorities (Works) Act: Employment Statistics.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give particulars of the number of persons employed by local authorities on (a) roads and bridges, and (b) Local Authorities (Works) Act works at the most recent convenient date, and at the corresponding date last year.

The employment afforded by local authorities on works on public roads, including bridges, at the end of October, 1956, the latest date for which particulars are available, was 18,375. The corresponding figure for October, 1955, was 20,963. On works under the Local Authorities (Works) Act employment was afforded to 591 persons at the end of October, 1956. The corresponding figure for 1955 was 1,203.
