Written Answers. - Purchasing Power of Pound Sterling.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state the purchasing power of the £ sterling as at mid-November in each year from 1938 to 1956 inclusive in terms of the purchasing power of the £ (a) at July, 1914; (b) at mid-November, 1938.

I propose, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, to circulate in the Official Report a statement giving the required information.

Following is the statement:—

The sums of money in (a) July, 1914, (b) mid-November, 1938, which would purchase at retail the same quantum of goods and services as £1 in mid-November of each year from 1938 to 1956 inclusive:
