Vol. 160 No. 16

Written Answers. - Industrial and Agricultural Workers' Earnings.

asked the Taoiseach if he will state (a) in respect of the Dublin districts, and (b) the State, the average weekly earnings of industrial and agricultural workers, respectively, in each year from 1938 to date.

I propose with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle to circulate in the Official Report a statement consisting of two tables, the first of which gives for 1938-1956 the average weekly earnings in a week in October (September for 1955 and 1956) for all industrial workers in industries producing transportable goods. The second table shows the annual averages of the minimum weekly rates of wages of permanent male agricultural labourers without free house or allowance of any kind in each of the years 1938 to date. In the case of industrial workers it is not possible to give separately the averages in the Dublin area. In the case of agricultural workers separate particulars are shown for the Dublin districts.

Following is the statement:—

TABLE 1.—Average weekly earnings of industrial workers engaged in transportable goods industries in a week in October in each of the years 1938-1954 and in a week in September in each of the years 1955 and 1956.
