Vol. 164 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Employment Schemes.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state how much of the £250,000 allocated for employment schemes has been spent to date in the Dublin district.

A State grant of £155,000 has been made available to the Dublin Corporation for new employment schemes in the current year, conditional on their contributing £38,750, making a total of £193,750. In addition, works costing £180,000 approximately, of which £144,000 would be State grant, sanctioned in previous years but not carried out before the 1st April, 1957, were available for expenditure. The expenditure on all these schemes up to the 13th October, 1957, amounted to £94,450, of which £75,550 would be State grant. As the Deputy is aware, the greater proportion of these schemes is carried out in the winter period.

Would the Parliamentary Secretary say how it is proposed to allocate the balance of £95,000, or has it been allocated already?

Of course, that is a matter for the Dublin Corporation, who will put up the schemes for sanction.

I assume that this £250,000 was for the relief of unemployment all over the country and that £155,000 has been allocated to Dublin. I assume that the balance will be allocated to other parts of the country?

That has not been allocated yet?

No, not yet.
