Vol. 164 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - South Galway Special Employment Works.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the amount allotted for special employment works schemes in South Galway, and (b) how many are employed on such works in the area.

The total allocation, including local contributions, for schemes financed from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote, 1957-58 in the area in question is £19,943, of which £8,591 is for bog development schemes—mainly drainage works—and rural improvements schemes sanctioned for execution during the summer months and now practically completed. The remainder, £11,352, made up of employment schemes in towns, £2,095; bog roads, £8,060, and rural improvements schemes, £1,197, relates to schemes intended to be carried out during the winter months and not yet started. At the date of the latest available returns, only one scheme was actually in progress, on which eight men were employed.
