Vol. 165 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Allotment of Donegal Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state (a) when the Bowen Estate, Burt, County Donegal, was acquired by the Land Commission, and (b) the cause of the delay in allotting holdings thereon.

This estate, comprising 264 acres, was acquired by the Land Commission in 1948.

Following the allotment of the bulk of the lands in 1950 and 1954, an area of 51 acres remained on hands and was utilised to create a holding for a migrant from the congested areas of West Donegal but, until recently, there was difficulty in obtaining a suitable allottee. However, I am glad to say that the holding was allotted earlier this week.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will indicate the lands acquired in East Donegal, which remain unallotted.

Land Commission records are not kept on a constituency basis. The position regarding arable lands on hands in the whole of County Donegal on estates acquired under the Land Acts, 1923-54, is set out in the attached statement which, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, will be circulated in the Official Report. In addition, the Land Commission have on hands some 13,000 acres of turbary, mountain grazing, woods and other inferior quality land.

The following are particulars of arable lands on hands in County Donegal:

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the cause of the delay in allotting a holding of land at Listicall, Saint Johnston, County Donegal.

Due to difficulty in obtaining a suitable allottee, this 35-acre holding remained on hands after the main part of the estate was distributed by the Land Commission. Provisional arrangements were made in 1956 for the allotment of the holding to a migrant from a congested area in West Donegal but the migration subsequently fell through. Alternative proposals for the disposal of the lands are at present under consideration by the Land Commission as a result of which it is expected that the holding will be allotted next month.
